Deciding on a career can feel daunting and a bit confusing regardless of the level of experience you may have and depends on additional conditions which should not be overlooked. Most of the time, employment is chosen because of previous experience, or someone mentioning “you’d be good at this”!
Now more than ever, it’s crucial to choose a career that will make you happy. We’re in the technology age, and employees are mixing telework with office work. So, it’s imperative to have flexibility, and if that’s the case, why not enjoy your work. Here are five things well worth considering that will help you narrow the decision process and guide you to a more purposeful position.
Skills. To decide where you’re going, you must consider your current status. What level skillset do you currently have? Is it really what you’d like to do in the future? If not, you have the power to change it all! Can any of your skills be transferred? What’s the observation of the future outlook for the career you’re considering (use the department of labor chart)?
Interest. Make a list of various types of activities you enjoy doing consistently. This can be as simple as walking outdoors, communicating with others, working indoors, helping people. Or, perhaps activities like organizing, and don’t forget your hobbies such as cooking or traveling.
Values. These are essential considerations such as having time to spend with your family, being off on Sundays for worship, maintaining a healthy lifestyle, and the ability to spend time exercising, earning livable wages.
Style of work desired. Do you prefer to work indoors, or outdoors? In a corporate office environment, or in the field not having an office at all? The choice is optional. You just have must choose.
After you’ve considered each of these areas in an authentic way, you’ll discover the best approach for you to obtain your vision. I recently had a conversation with someone about how kiosks replace cashier jobs. We see them in most major chains such as Target, Walmart, and Grocery stores. I’m guilty of choosing to work with the cashier hoping that my dedication would impact the decision maker’s choice for keeping the cashiers on the registers and perhaps save their job.
The truth is whether I stand in line with a human cashier or an electric impersonator, it won’t slow down technology. Believe it or not, computers create more jobs. How? It takes a workforce to man the machines. The question is, are there enough people willing to improve their level of skills to meet the rising demand for technology.
Today’s modern workforce is becoming more challenging to convey to both millennials and baby-boomers. There are unique hurdles posed for employers and workers. Each one has a responsibility to learn how to navigate the process if there is a desire to move our economy and careers forward.
Millennials want to work in places that allow them to play with the latest gadgets and be innovative. They should be allowed to contribute ideas and learn to use their voice. As time progress, it will be needed.
Baby-boomers are reluctant to learn how to use specialized uprising machines, but it’s essential to stay current and develop professionally within your industry. Learn how to master LinkedIn challenges, and new computer programs to avoid being stagnant. Perhaps, even non-tech savvy positions can keep you within the loop of maintaining a career in the workforce. Make it a habit of learning something new every year.
Managers desire to expand their businesses, grow their bottom line and stand out among the competition. Each one has a different objective. So, how does everyone meet in the middle if we want our economy to flourish?
Forbes states “Technology has replaced 90% of jobs humans used to do”. Baby boomers are experienced and carry far more weight when it comes to having the ability to mentor and teach work ethics. So, it’s crucial to maintain a certain level of experience onboard an enterprise. Senior expertise is precious for companies to continue existence and growth. Being knowledgeable does not excuse the fact that times are changing, and baby boomers must keep up with technology if they desire to remain in the workforce.
An establishment desiring to grow must also offer upgraded equipment that invites the innovation of the millennials. Having outdated office equipment indicates hard labor, and that won’t fly. Conduct weekly, monthly, or quarterly training that will ensure the employees they’re cared for, respected, and appreciated. Implement mentorship training to support employees. This identifies there’s room for growth within the company, and you believe in their welfare because you’re investing time and effort for their future. Avoid high turnovers by keeping a mixture of new ideas between the two groups and remember to place employees where they can operate in their passion. It requires changing their position or having to alter their pay. Either way, if you have excellent employees place them where they’ll excel and your company will shine. Then, it becomes a win-win for everyone.
It’s possible to find additional training without draining your bank account. There are student loans, grants, the GI Bill/Post 911, and even some organizations that offer low-cost training that can boost your level of pay with one exam.
It’s time to be creative when considering your future because being stubborn and unwilling to advance won’t get you very far in the corporate world.

First, sit in a quiet area with your pen and paper. Close your eyes, and visualize what you want your future to look like 5 years, 10 years, and maybe 20 years from now? What type of lifestyle have you imagined?
What tools will you need to reach the short-term goals? Make sure to include destination dates to have them become measurable. Suggested tools you can use to make things easier are 1) Trello.com; 2) Quickbooks.com; 3) if you’re a business owner, consider speaking with an advisor who can guide or help you develop a plan for retirement, delegate your estate, and create financial security for your family. Finally, determine if your current situation will allow you to reach your future goals. Be realistic with yourself and encourage yourself to gain the knowledge or skill to make things happen.
I CHALLENGE you to do something different that will get you closer to the woman you desire to be. What will it take? One small step at a time. Start by writing out your dreams and then taking the necessary steps to make it a reality. These will be your strategic goal planning steps.
